On Tuesday June 13th, sixty Haliburton Real Easy Ryders headed to Gananoque for 3 days of cycling. Shortly after arriving to the Super 8 by Wyndham, we cycled off under clear skies. We enjoyed the sights along the waterfront and the farmlands further north. Following the ride, we gathered in the motel’s breakfast room for happy hour and shared a terrific assortment of appetizers before heading out to various restaurants.
Wednesday morning we woke to pouring rain, but that didn’t deter some Ryders from setting off to Rockport along the Waterfront Trail. Some groups delayed their departure to the afternoon to avoid the heavy rain and some Ryders opted to enjoy some non-cycling activities such as shopping, taking in a show at the Thousand Islands Playhouse, touring the Kingston Penitentiary or walking through the Brockville Railway Tunnel.
Wednesday evening we enjoyed a wonderful catered dinner at the Gananoque Golf and Country Club. Thankfully we finished our dinners before the fire alarm was triggered and Dave was able to “rescue” his dessert! The fun continued with an impromptu gathering back at the motel with music and a sing-a-long thanks to Brian Sachs and Drew Allen.
Thursday we cycled to the ferry dock and went across to Howe Island to enjoy some more cycling. Despite two flat tires and a dead e-bike battery, we had another great day of riding.
And what better way to top off a great trip than to enjoy a one hour cruise from the port at Ivy Lea. Captain Jack took us through the 1000 Islands where we saw Boldt Castle, the Statue of St. Lawrence, the 1000 Islands International Bridge, and Zavikon Islands containing the smallest International Bridge in the world.
This fabulous trip would not have been possible without the hard work and detailed planning of our spring trip committee, Phil Meades, Drew Allen and Leslie Brown. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into organizing this trip. Thanks also to ride coordinator Dave Northcote for mapping out the routes. And to all our members who were able to join us, thank you for your smiles, enthusiasm and participation!
Mark your calendars for our fall trip to Ottawa/Gatineau planned for September 12th – 14th!
Happy riding,
